Polish Humanitarian Action has commenced to provide aid to the besieged city of Mosul.  PAH has distributed packages with necessities among 190 families who have sheltered in the southern part of the city.  More packages are planned to be given away at the end of December and at the beginning of January.  Aid will reach the total of 800 families (ca. 5 thousand people). In 2017 PAH’ actions in Iraq will be extended as the time goes by.

Last week the Polish Humanitarian Action, in collaboration with Czech Caritas and Iraqi RNVDO, has provided the people fleeing from Mosul fights with packages containing high calorie dry food, water, hygiene products and cleaning agents.  Aid has reached about 1000 people who have found their refuge in the southern districts of the city. In the following weeks two similar distribution actions are scheduled for the most needy families.  Aid will reach the total of 800 families, i.e. about 5 thousand people.
In the new year PHA will expand its support in the region – PHA’s employees monitor the situation of people staying close to the frontline and in the Qayyarah complex of refugee camps located 60 km south of Mosul.  Due to the current crisis, several dozen thousands people came there only last month, with may more still arriving.
Current PHA’s actions in Iraq are financed by PHA’s donors who are members of the PHA SOS Club; money gathered allows to quickly meet current needs.

Fights for Mosul have been continuing since mid-October.   According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), 100 thousand civilians fled from fighting areas over the past two months. Some of them have reached the camps for the internally displaced; others are still seeking safe refuge.  Severe situation is even more difficult due to winter – temperatures are getting lower and rainfall plentiful.  People suffer food and water shortages; they also need warm clothing, medicines and hygiene products.  In temporary shelters and unfinished buildings there are more and more sick people. The situation of children, elderly, sick and disabled persons is particularly difficult.
