2022/2023 – MADAGASCAR – WATER, FOOD, DISASTER RISK REDUCTIONback

As part of the project, we are building wells for the community of the Grand Sud macroregion (Androy and Atsimo-Andrefana regions) in Madagascar, which is most severely affected by drought. In Antanimor and its vicinity, where we have been present since May 2022 and have already built seven wells, another five water intakes are being drilled in rural areas. New wells are a source of water for drinking, cooking and irrigation. Access to water and appropriate agricultural techniques increase the chances of obtaining crops from home gardens, which are the main source of food for local communities. For this reason we also provide seeds and seedlings to residents.

We provide hot meals for over 1,100 students in nine rural schools. In most cases, this is the children’s only meal during the day. The subsistence programme allows them to attend school, as otherwise they are forced to miss classes to meet their basic nutritional needs.

In Ankililoake and the surrounding area, three wells were built as part of an earlier project and we are currently drilling two wells that will be used by many thousands of people. Currently, they travel up to 8 km one way every day to carry water back to their homes. A rapidly progressing deforestation is also a serious problem in this region, which is why we are implementing a programme of planting local tree species. We provide residents with seedlings, which they foster so that they are not destroyed by breeding cattle and recurrent droughts. In exchange for their work, they receive food aid that helps them survive periods of drought and lack of crops (so-called food-for-work initiative). In addition, as part of the programme, we provide participants with special solar furnaces and energy-saving furnaces that reduce the consumption of biomass necessary for cooking.

In total, the aid will reach 20,000 people.
