Within the framework of this project, we are providing unconditional cash transfers for nine months to meet the food needs of needy families in Jowhar and Mahaday districts. These districts are located in the Middle Shabelle region, which was once considered the granary of Somalia. Unfortunately, as a result of repeated droughts and locust infestations, farmers have found themselves at a disadvantage and many have given up cultivating their land, which was not producing sufficient crops due to the lack of rain.

Our project aims to support the agricultural-pastoral population affected by the drought. The cash transfers we provide will cover the food and other basic needs of those affected by the crisis. This assistance is targeted at 6137 families (3333 families in Jowhar district and 2804 families in Mahaday district).

From April to December 2023, we are providing unconditional cash transfers to these families through vouchers. Unconditional cash assistance is an effective method of supporting affected persons in meeting their critical needs, particularly regarding food. Most villages in Jowhar and Mahaday are hard-to-reach areas that are currently facing severe food shortages due to prolonged periods of drought. This is why voucher-based cash assistance is the safest way for them to receive support. Unconditional cash transfers play an important role in reducing hunger and providing individuals with dignified opportunities to meet their basic needs.

A total of 6137 households will benefit from the assistance provided within the framework of this project.
