The project is implemented in Balcad District, Middle Shabelle Region, where severe floods occurred due to heavy rainfall in May 2025. More than 8,000 families have been displaced, houses, water intakes and road infrastructure have been destroyed, and the threat of diseases such as cholera, acute diarrhoea and malaria has increased significantly.
The goals of the project include:
- rapid restoration of access to safe water through repair of water points and expansion of the water supply network;
- construction of latrines to reduce defecation in the open and improve hygiene levels;
- distribution of hygiene kits and basic necessities (NFIs) to 1,000 families;
- conducting of hygiene education activities and training of promoters and water committees managing the resources.
The project aims to support 6,000 people, mainly internally displaced families.
Activities will be carried out in collaboration with local authorities and other partners present in the region, including agencies from the WASH cluster. Our aid is based on community engagement, support for vulnerable groups and development of local capacity and sustainability.
