A powerful earthquake in February 2023 in north-eastern Syria affected at least 3 million people in Idlib province, with nearly 2,000 buildings completely destroyed. As a consequence of the disaster, the water and sanitation infrastructure – already severely strained by the warfare – was all but destroyed, including water storage systems, sanitation, sewage networks. The local community was suddenly faced with no possibility of accessing clean water and preserving adequate levels of hygiene, with the risk of developing dangerous diseases, including cholera.
