The war in Ukraine has deeply affected rural areas, disrupting agricultural activities, including dairy farming.

Many families who relied on small-scale dairy production have faced severe losses due to culling livestock, broken supply chains, losing breadwinner, and decreased productivity in fodder harvesting. This has left rural communities struggling with food security and economic instability.

PAH will support small-scale dairy farmers, who manage around 10 dairy herd, including 3-5 dairy cows through providing consultations on modern practices and recommendations from experts in 3 cornerstone spheres of dairy business: milk quality, animal nutrition and veterinary services accompanied with relevant in-kind support (hygiene kits for udder, milk and feed analyses, first veterinary aid kits and mineral additives for dairy cows). Selection also focused on several types of vulnerability: Internally displaced person’s status (or hosting IDPs families) loss of traditional markets, loss of income or breadwinner’s job, and predominantly women-led households.

Second type of interventions is mainly aimed at promoting dairy activities among local people currently engaged in dairy farming, such as “Milk Festivals” (or other dairy-themed events), and focuses on the younger generation by holding drawing competitions to raise awareness of the importance and potential of farming. Residents of two communities will participate in dairy-themed events, while over 300 children from 15 communities will join drawing competitions to raise awareness and celebrate family-based milk production.

The ultimate goal is to improve food security and economic resilience among rural households through sustainable dairy production.

In total, aid will reach 140 households. Indirectly – along with promoting activities – project will reach around 2,000-3,000 inhabitants.
