The project provides a comprehensive humanitarian response combining initiatives in the areas of health, nutrition and access to water and sanitary facilities. The programme focuses on the most urgent needs of people affected by the conflict in consideration of their safety and protection.

The scale of the need is enormous – since the start of the conflict in Sudan, over a million people have already arrived in Renk alone, and further thousands arrive every month. Most of them have no access to shelter or basic services, which places an additional strain on the very limited infrastructure and increases the risk of disease and violence, particularly against women and children.

The project covers more than 170 000 people – refugees, returnees, internally displaced persons and host communities. Priority is given to the most vulnerable groups, such as young children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and people with chronic illnesses.

These activities are based on an ongoing assessment of needs and close co-operation with other humanitarian organisations, with a view to ensuring co-ordinated long-term life-saving assistance in one of the most overburdened regions of South Sudan.
