What is the situation in Madagascar?

Madagascar is struggling to cope with the negative effects of climate change, which is affecting the southern part of the island the hardest. The last few years have seen endless drought. The rainy season is becoming shorter and more unpredictable. What is certain is the cyclones that cause devastation in a few days, which are then removed over months and years.

Meeting basic needs is very difficult in these conditions. There is not enough water for drinking and cooking – one has to walk many kilometers to fetch it. There is not enough of it to grow vegetables, and even if you manage to plant crops it is very difficult to maintain them. These and other factors, including external ones, have led to rising food prices.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF POLISH HUMANITARIAN ACTION?

We have been working in Madagascar since 2022. We are responding to the negative effects of climate change that are affecting the population in various ways, including providing food and access to water. However, regardless of the type of support, all our activities involve the people themselves.

We build wells and water intakes and, where they are established, we run so-called food for work programmes – donating seedlings and seeds to locals who look after the crops in return for food. We built the island’s first sand dam – the community participated in its construction and will use it. We are providing solar cookers and establishing forest nurseries. We also provide hot meals in schools.
