In Syria, more than 16.5 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian aid – the majority of whom are women and children. According to UN figures, as many as 60 per cent of the population are facing food insecurity, and over 90 per cent of Syrians are living below the poverty line. The situation is particularly dire in the Deir ez-Zor Governor, which has the highest levels of malnutrition in the whole country.

Agriculture is the population’s main source of livelihood, but the farmland has been destroyed as a result of the war and the adverse effects of climate change. As a result, 89 per cent of residents have to borrow money to buy food, and more than half cut back on the number of meals they eat each day.

The project aims to provide essential food support to 343 of the most vulnerable families – internally displaced families, families headed by single mothers, and families with elderly members or people with disabilities.

PAH will provide culturally appropriate parcels containing a supply of nutritious food. There will be two distributions in total, covering the whole family’s food requirements for two months. Immediate food aid will reduce the risk of malnutrition and related illnesses.

Funds for this project were raised as part of Irena Owsiak’s campaign.

In total, the support will cover around 1,715 people (343 households).
