The staff and associates of Polish Radio Katowice have launched a fundraising campaign for humanitarian aid in South Sudan. The funds raised will be used to build the Opa well. The name of the project was inspired by one of the characters in the radio play ‘Nikaj’, which was produced by Radio Katowice.
The 60,000 zlotys raised via the Pomagamy platform will be used to build or modernise an existing water point for the community in Obbo or Pajok Payam in the Magwi region of South Sudan. In the selected region, there is a high risk of diseases linked to a lack of adequate hygiene standards; therefore, the project will also include promoting hygiene in the local community. Furthermore, the proximity to the Ugandan border and population movements underscore the need for access to a stable and safe water supply.
The final location of the well will be determined following consultation with the local community and authorities, a technical and hydrogeological assessment, and coordination with other organisations operating in similar areas, in order to avoid duplication of effort.
