What are the origins of the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon?

Since 2020 Lebanon has been facing numerous challenges, such as the economic crisis, political instability and regional conflicts, including tensions on the Israeli-Lebanese border. These factors have significantly affected the socioeconomic landscape, exacerbating unemployment, poverty and food insecurity among both Lebanese citizens and refugees residing in the country.

Some 60-70% of Lebanese population is under 35, and at least 50% are women. The marginalization of girls and women and the barriers placed in the way of an active social and professional life in Lebanon are multifaceted. Only 29% of adult women are economically active, which is why it is so important to pay attention to the needs of youth and women who are particularly affected by socioeconomic challenges and lack of opportunities to enter the labor market.

By harnessing the potential of young people, especially women, promoting social cohesion and incorporating environmental sustainability, we want to contribute as an organization to the economic stability and overall well-being of communities in Lebanon.

What is PAH doing in response to the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon?

We started our activities in Lebanon by providing immediate assistance after the explosion at the port of Beirut in 2020. We provided financial assistance, psychological assistance and support in carrying out repairs to the affected residents of the city.

In the fall of 2020, we also launched the GLOW Center for Empowerment training center in the capital, where young people from those backgrounds that are particularly vulnerable to economic crises can acquire and develop professional and personal skills. Support is provided both to Lebanese citizens as well as refugees from Syria and Palestine, whose access to the labor market is hampered even further. Thanks to the special free training offered by PAH, their competitiveness in terms of their professional path increases, and their self-confidence is boosted. The classes conducted at the center are varied, ranging from entrepreneurship to programming and from computer graphics to robotics.

Thanks to co-financing within the framework of the Polish development cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland and the support of PAH donors, activities at the center continued in 2021-2023. In 2024, in addition to the implementation of training at the center, we also established a mobile team that operates throughout Lebanon. It will be tasked with conducting workshops called “Building Social Cohesion” which aim to build a sense of unity, understanding and mutual respect among 800 young people aged 10-17.

We are implementing the projects in Lebanon in cooperation with a local partner, International Humanitarian Relief (IHR) Lebanon.
