Monsoon hits Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh. PAH appeals for support.

The ethnic persecutions and repressions of the Rohingya muslim minority carried out by Burma’s military authorities has led to the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands across the border to Bangladesh, seeking refuge in provisional camps. A situation made worse by the adverse weather condition of the monsoon season. Torrential rains, strong winds and potential cyclones put the lives of refugees staying in the highly congested settlements at serious risk. Having faced killings and rapes in Myanmar, they now face floods, landslides and more deaths in Bangladesh’s refugee camps. PAH urgently needs your help to ensure that the most vulnerable and defenceless – children, the elderly and the disabled – receive the assistance they need to survive the monsoon season.

  

“The temporary shelters that the Rohingya are staying in are unsteady and they are made from materials that don’t stand up to the current weather conditions. Each passing day of the monsoon season means more vulnerable families,” said Aleksandra Zabłocka, coordinator of PAH’s emergency response team. “We have commenced our activities and we are ready to expand our aid to include more people in it, but we need urgent financial support.”

PAH has rapidly responded to the crisis by activating the funds collected by the PAH SOS Club.  We are in the field, actively reinforcing the refugees’ shelters against the rain and providing food to the Ukhia and Teknaf Upazila camps. However, with continuous new arrivals and worsening weather conditions, more and more refugees urgently need their shelters reinforced. PAH is in Bangladesh providing help, but, the scale of ours activities will depend on the funds that we raise in response to this crisis.
