What is the situation like in Ukraine?

The escalation of war in Ukraine in February 2022 caused a massive humanitarian crisis, as well as forced millions of people to leave their homes behind. There is a necessity for aid of both the people who escaped from the dangerous regions to different parts of the country, and the people who remained in their homes.

The extent of aid necessitated by the situation is massive. The people escaping from war must abandon and leave behind their prior life – they do not have employment, or money. They are in need of the basic products (food, warm clothes, hygienic articles, etc.). One of the most vulnerable groups are the children, to whom war poses as a source of extreme trauma. They need psychological aid, and access to further education and development.

Additionally, the elderly people also remain in a dire situation – they have difficulties to take care of themselves as a result of such demanding and drastic conditions. They are commonly alone – and thusly, without access to necessary aid.

What actions is PAH taking?

We are providing aid in Ukraine since the beginning of conflict in the Eastern regions of the country in 2014. Our immediate actions were a response to the crisis – we have been helping to provide medical aid, we have been delivering food rations, hygienic products, blankets, sleeping bags, and other products necessary for survival. In later stages of the conflict, we have been aiding the people who were unable to leave their homes – most importantly, the elderly and the persons with disabilities. We have provided them with the basic survival products and psychological aid.

Since 24 February 2022, in response to the country-wide crisis, we have increased the reach of our operations. Since the beginnings, we have been aiding both the Ukrainian refugees arriving to Poland, as well as the actions on the Polish-Ukrainian border, and Ukraine itself.

As part of our constant actions in Ukraine, we concurrently provide aid to the people staying in the country during war. We regularly provide material aid to the people who were unable to leave their homes. We provide food, hygienic articles, psychological and financial aid, we renovate and fix private homes, social institutions, and institutions for elderly care, as well as provide wood, furnaces, heat generators and thermal blankets during the winter.

We currently hold five centers in Ukraine, and the reach of our actions involves, among others the Northern, Eastern and Southern regions of the country, in which the aid is the most needed. Our actions concentrate on the people from the most vulnerable groups: women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. We have also established 16 psychosocial support centers in smaller towns, and we use the mobile psychologists’ teams to reach the peeple in isolated areas. Thanks to our cooperation with local partners, we can act faster, and more effectively.
